SL Triathlon

If you think it's impossible to get in shape while logged on to Second Life, think again. Meet Wolfgang and Suzy Spaatz, the founders of SL Triathlon. Located on Kona Island in SL, the birthplace of Ironman triathlon in real life, SL Triathlon is Second Life's only global triathlon training club, catering to enthusiasts in the swimming, cycling and running races every year. No, they aren't kidding – they claim to be able to improve your cycling performance for your next triathlon race while you're logged in to SL.

Wolfgang Spaatz has been an active triathlete for over 26 years, and is a multiple Ironman to boot. "Not everyone has time to go to the gym to take a spinning class. Many triathletes and cyclists I know train indoors on their turbo trainers in front of a TV or PC whenever they have time. They usually listen to instructions from a DVD or just listen to music on their iPods." Thus, SL Triathlon was born; a way for cyclist trainers to do their indoor workout with a trainer, but logging in to Second Life alongside their "spinning" (stationary cycling) workouts.

The service provides interaction with athletes, instead of their simply plugging in a DVD or their iPod and going at it. Students ride their cycles at home while their avatars workout in the virtual gym. A trainer is present to assist with questions and give encouragement, while a live music stream is provided.

SL Triathlon has grown to over 600 members since their launch in 2007, and they also run triathlons in SL. "It's a real competition.. Also, you can race any time at SL Triathlon. Click on the leaderboard to choose the number of laps and then just swim, bike and run. The leaderboard measures your time." Plus, after a hard workout, you and your avatar can cross over to the beach, enjoy a beverage at the tiki bar and get some tips from the trainers.
